Swimming like a Mermaid | Aquamermaid School Review

I have loved swimming for as long as I can remember. We had a pool growing up, and you could find me swimming for hours on end, making up games, stories and of course, pretending to be a mermaid. The pool was my getaway, the place where I could be anyone, or anything.

So, when I was given the chance to participate in Aquamermaid School‘s adult mermaid class, I was over the moon. After dragging myself out of bed to get to the pool for 10:45 (I know, it’s not that early, but I love to sleep in on weekends!), I headed to the pool (University Settlement, by OCAD), conveniently located by the TTC and with ample parking in the area.

I always get nervous before going to things where I don’t know anyone else, but our group was really fun, and we proved strangers can work together to achieve anything!

After heading to the pool, the instructor gave us mermaid tails. The tail is composed of a monofin, which is essentially flippers shaped like a tail. You put your feet into the tail like you would a pair of flippers, and fasten your feet in with a plastic strap. Then, you pull the tail over your legs and up to your stomach.

Fear not, despite being worried the tail would not roll up my ass, the material is a stretchy, just like a bathing suit, so it’s really easy to pull up, especially if you hop in the water! You can buy tails on Aquamermaid’s website for $140, or a super gorgeous silicone one for $3,000, but a tail to borrow is included in the class.

After a quick swim test without the tails, we were ready to start learning how to be a mermaid! We went over the basics of swimming on our front, and on our back, and then how to go from one to the other. We dove under the water to pick up rings (one of my favourite things as a kid!), and worked as a team to push a large floaty through the water. We practiced throwing a ball to each other, and picked out mermaid names (I decided on Dory). Man, was all of that a work out! We had time for a free swim, and for photos (obviously this was the biggest Insta-worthy day of my life).

Aquamermaid started in Montreal, and has now grown to Ottawa, Toronto, Kitchener, Quebec City, and even into the United States! It’s amazing to see a homegrown, Canadian company thrive under the leadership of a kickass female entrepreneur who wanted to combine her dream jobs, into a dream career. You can even work with them to open your own school in a city near you!

They offer memberships for die-hard mermaids who want to swim their hearts out any time they’d like for 3 months, or individual classes for adults (14+) or children, are just $60 for an hour. Private birthday parties, and bachelorette parties are options as well, and I think it would be hilarious to swim around with my friends just before a wedding, pretending to be mermaids!

I highly recommend checking out this really fun class, and don’t forget, everyone can be a mermaid!

I attended this class for free upon invitation from Aquamermaid, but my opinion is honest and open!
