Plaid & Pencils: Netflix’s SDCC Fall Preview

San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) was crazy this year once again in terms of announcements. It is still very much on my list of places to attend so I can geek out. A bunch of trailers for movies like Ready Player One which looks like the penultimate pop culture movie. A new Thor: Ragnarok trailer which showcased even more delicious easter eggs for us to try and dissect, and a more low key movie based on a graphic novel called My Friend Dahmer which showcases Jeffrey Dahmer as a kid from the point of view of their friend. I am particularly interested in this one as I had a class back in University where we looked at his case and it was a very fascinating and dark journey so hopefully the movie captures this.

Netflix had a great showing this year too. First, we have Marvel’s Defenders which I have been waiting for for a long time. While the Avengers are busy dealing with issues around the World and soon issues in the Universe with Thanos. Who is going to protect the city of New York from the big bad Sigourney Weaver, the team of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist that’s who. It will be great to see all these heroes who have been operating in different parts of the city finally all meet up and team up. I think the dynamic between them should prove interesting as you have people like Daredevil and Iron Fist who wants to be heroes, whereas Jessica Jones and Luke Cage didn’t really sign up to be heroes it was more of right place at the right time.

Keeping with the Marvel theme, we have The Punisher on its way to Netflix, I loved Jon Bernthal as the vigilante in the second season of Daredevil and I am really looking forward to showing as he isn’t the same as the rest of the Defenders, he uses guns and explosives to kill crime so the morality should be an interesting area to explore. The other piece I wanted to discuss was Iron Fist getting a second season. My favourite and most anticipated hero of the four and he didn’t have the best showing. The main reason was that you put a mystical martial artist dealing with issues in an office, not the best move on that one. So I was very surprised that a new season was announced. This is their chance though, they have a new person helming the second season so they get a shot make the second season what the first season should have been by taking the criticism and learning from it.

The last, but certainly not least trailer that I wanted to discuss was Stranger Things 2. I started watching the first season before it really blew up and was I ever amazed. The blend of terror, 80s, sci-fi, and synth was a work of art. With the return of Eleven and a beast even greater than the last, this is sure to be a great continuation of the series. It is said to be even darker than last season which is hard to imagine as last season was pretty dark, but I look forward to jumping in my seat all the same. The cast is amazing, I love that the main characters are the kids and teens in the show and they are the ones dealing with the paranormal issues. I also have a sweet spot for Wynona Rider, it is fantastic to see her using her acting chops again and she really nails her role.  The last thing I want to touch on is the soundtrack, the synth is a reason alone to watch the show, it set such an eerie vibe and I can’t wait to hear the soundtrack for season 2.

Viewers of Netflix have a lot to look forward to and I hope they continue to keep the inner geek in me happy.

Ps. They currently have an animated Castlevania tv series that is based on the game which is pretty great if you want to live out your childhood.
