Last year I shared my office cubicle makeover, and today I want to go one step further and space some tips to a perfect workspace. Whether you’re at home or at work, making a space your own is important for productivity. Here are some ideas for creating the perfect workspace.
Make It Comfortable
For me, comfort is the most important aspect of a workspace. It needs to be a space where you want to spend time. That means making sure the air quality is good, you have a good desk and chair setup, and the temperature is comfortable. I’ve talked before about why plants are a good addition to any space, and it’s is no different for a workspace. Plants liven the area up, help with air quality, and make you feel better overall.
Here are some great desk setups that I’ve pulled from Pinterest to give you some inspiration!
Add Personal Touches
Whether it’s a workspace in your home or at an external office, I think it’s important to include personal touches throughout the space. Before Rowan and I moved to our current apartment, we had this workspace setup in our bedroom. It incorporated things we both love, including books, art, and decor that matched our personalities.
Where I used to work, I had a cubicle, so I had a little area to myself. I wanted to remind myself of things at home, so I brought in elements of our home and my life to brighten things up. I often received compliments on my use of the space and how I made it feel like “me.”
Incorporate Fun DIY Pieces
This is one of my favourite DIY projects because it encourages others to chat with you. I wanted to offer others a treat and to meet new people in my office. If you have a home office, you can create something similar for yourself, your kids, or your partner.
Here are the DIY projects I created for this space:
- DIY Candy Tray: This was another Dollar Store upcycle. I used¬†Pebeo Porcelaine paint¬†to paint the bottom of the tray. I wrote “Eat Me” in chalk to encourage people to pick one up.
- DIY Chalkboard: I used regular chalkboard paint on the back of an old picture frame for this one.
- DIY Triangle Banner: This is an easy way to add a little colour and pattern to your space. I just cut out triangles from my leftover scrapbook paper.
Add Artwork and Your Favourite Quotes
I also love to add some artwork, a few quotes, and a cute desk calendar to my workspace. I love to support local artists, and I usually pick something up at craft and artisan fairs throughout the year. I also enjoy displaying my own work!
This is the desk calendar by a Toronto artist, Carolyn Draws, that I picked up at the Toronto One-of-a-Kind Show last winter. I use this on my desk at work, and it keeps me on track with dates.
There are so many awesome printables available online as well. You can simply print the artwork you like, put it in a frame, and instantly add something special to your workspace.
