I wanted to chat about my Christmas Traditions today on the blog! I’m slowly getting my toes wet into the Christmas celebrations and decided to start decorating today. I spent a beautiful day at the Toronto Santa Clause parade on Sunday. While the parade didn’t quite get me into the spirit, creating Christmas cards and setting up my Christmas Village certainly helped!
Giving Handmade Gifts: This is one of the biggest traditions I try and keep alive as a personal goal and for a sense of fulfillment. For the last few years I’ve created handmade gifts for my grandmother (pillows with the family on them, a quilt with a handwritten note from every member of the family, a calendar with dates & family photos). One year I was able to give everyone in my immediate family a handmade gift. While it’s becoming more difficult to create handmade gifts for my friends and family, I try and buy others handmade items or support local businesses during this time.
I’ve also started to create personally designed cards and prints for Christmas. Last year I created Passion8 themed cards for my contributors, and created a Passion8 Holiday Card. This year, I wanted to do something different, and in the process decided to put the cards up for sale. You can purchase a set of six colouring book style Christmas postcards on my Etsy!
Making Christmas Goodies: Ok, well sometimes this is really my mom making the goodies, but I’m always around to help or taste test. Our favourites include Nuts & Bolts (a cereal, pretzel, baked mix), Fudge, Cheese Balls, Truffles & whatever other recipes my mom has read about in one of her food magazines or saw on the Food Network any given week. This is the first year I won’t have two weeks at home to help her out, but I do plan on making some goodies of my own in my apartment.
Decorate the House: Usually I’m the first to get the tree decorating going. Last year, my brothers and I were not home from school until about a week before Christmas. My mom doesn’t like to decorate without us and we waited for the tree to be decorated until we were all home. This year, I’m not sure when I’ll make it home. But, I’ve already started to decorate my apartment, starting with my Christmas Village
As a kid I vividly remember my maternal grandmother (gramma), putting together her Christmas Village in the basement each year. I knew I had to have one too. Last year, one of my friends got me started with some pieces, and my mom gave me a few she had set aside from various gifts. This year, my paternal grandmother (grandma), is moving out of her home. The house I had had Christmas at for nearly every year I’ve been alive. She had a lot of decorations to get rid of that she could not take to my aunts, this year I got to take a few pieces for my village.
Visit with Family & Friends: My extended family gets together every year, and this year it will be at our apartment. It’s scary, exciting and nerve-wracking all-in-one to know we are hosting my family after only six months of living together! But, my parents will be doing A LOT of the work, especially with cooking the turkey and helping us get setup. Thank god.
Our friends also have a yearly potluck to get together to hang out, catch up, eat ridiculous amounts of food and drink excessive amounts of beer, wine and other cocktails.
This year I’ve decided to do a Christmas Giveaway! I am giving away two sets of 12 Christmas Cards to two lucky winners! You will receive one of each card in the collection + your choice of the remaining 4 cards. This is valued at $20 each! The giveaway ends on November 26th at 11:59pm and the winner will be contacted right away so they can get their cards sent ASAP in December!
